  32.         Yggdrasil Computing, Incorporated is now shipping a beta CDROM
  33. release of a bootable Linux/GNU/X-based UNIX(R) clone for PC
  34. compatibles, tentatively named LGX.  The system uses version 0.99.5 of the
  35. Linux kernel, which is being developed from scratch by Linus Torvalds
  36. and an international group of skilled contributors working over the
  37. internet to complete the GNU project.
  38.  
  39.         LGX beta is the first PC UNIX(R) clone to include multimedia
  40. facilities as part of its base configuration.  The beta release also
  41. features X-windows, networking, a complete source tree (including X
  42. windows and TeX), a demonstration facility, an easy installation
  43. mechanism, and the ability to run directly from the CDROM.
  44.  
  45.         Some of the otherwise unused space on the CDROM has been used
  46. to distribute other interesting software.  On the beta release, this
  47. space holds a copy of the X11R5 MIT contrib tree with an updated
  48. version of the Andrew multimedia system.  Future releases will include
  49. different things in the otherwise unused CDROM space.
  50.  
  51.         The LGX beta CDROM is in standard ISO-9660 format with
  52. Rockridge extensions, so it can easily be browsed from other types of
  53. computers or other operating systems.
  54.  
  55.     Yggdrasil is greatly indebted to the many free software
  56. developers whose efforts have made this release possible.  As a token
  57. of appreciation, anyone who has made a major contribution to the LGX
  58. beta software can get a free copy, which includes the CD, manual, and
  59. boot floppies.  Otherwise, the price is $60.  The beta release plus
  60. the first production release can be purchased together for $99.  You
  61. can order directly from Yggdrasil or through a reseller in the United
  62. States or Europe.

  74. CONTENTS OF THE BETA RELEASE

  76.         Almost every piece of software on the distribution has been
  77. updated since the previous December 8th alpha release.  The 34,557
  78. files on this plug-and-play CDROM include:

  80.     SOURCE CODE
  81.         o  Complete source tree, including X (with Xfree86 1.1
  82.            code) and TeX sources.  You cannot yet do a complete
  83.            build from the top of this tree, but you should be able
  84.            to easily find the source code for any binary on the CD.
  85.         o SPECIAL FOR THE BETA RELEASE: the complete X11R5 MIT contrib
  86.           tree with the Andrew 5.0 tree replaced by a snapshot of an
  87.           Andrew 5.1 tree in the process of being ported to Linux
  88.           (this is not automatically installed as part of any
  89.           installation, but it makes the CD useful for reference even
  90.           after the beta release has been superseded),
  91.  
  92.     USER INTERFACE FACILITIES: X-WINDOWS AND MULTIMEDIA
  93.         o  X windows (X11R5) for S3, 8514/A and VGA displays using
  94.            ET4000, ET3000, Paradise, Trident 8900c, Genoa, or
  95.            ATI VGA Wonder chipsets.  (NOTE: due to trade secrecy
  96.            Diamond Stealth is not supported),
  97.         o  The full motion video (MPEG) viewer from Professor
  98.            Larry Rowe's research group at UC Berkeley.
  99.         o  Sound players and Hannu Savolainen's drivers for the
  100.            AdLib, SoundBlaster 1.0-2.0 (and compatibles including
  101.            ThunderBoard and Ati Stereo F/X), SoundBlaster Pro,
  102.            and ProAudioSpectrum 16.  (ProAudioSpectrum+ is not
  103.            supported yet.  The original ProAudioSpectrum is not
  104.            supported nor is it likely to be supported the near

  107.         o  Tcl, Tk, wish and expect.  Tcl is a scripting language
  108.            ("tool command language") written by Professor
  109.            John Ousterhout at UC Berkeley.  Tk is a toolkit that
  110.            allows one to quickly write X-windows programs in Tcl.
  111.            Wish is a Tk/Tcl interpretter.  The beta distribution
  112.            includes versions of wish with support for "drag and drop"
  113.            applications, and compound documents and hypertext.  Expect
  114.            is a system written in Tcl Don Libes that "performs
  115.            programmed dialogue with other interactive programs."

  196.             250MB (everything is installed on the hard disk).

  198.             You can use MFM, RLL, IDE, ESDI or SCSI hard disks.  If
  199.             you use a SCSI hard disk, then you have to use one of the
  200.             SCSI controllers listed above or a Seagate ST-01, ST-02,
  201.             Future Domain TMC-88x series or other SCSI controller
  202.             based on the Future Domain TMC-950 chip for your hard disk
  203.             only, but you cannot use these additional cards to control
  204.             a CDROM drive.
